Fire Association of Philadelphia FIRE MARK. American insurance company’s fire marks were placed on the exterior of a house and were intended to discourage malicious arson by showing that the owner would not suffer greatly if the building was destroyed. Additionally, the mark stood as a guarantee to fire brigades that the insurance company which insured the house in question would reward handsomely the brigade extinguishing a blaze on the premises. The mark design includes an early hose and hydrant for The "FIRE ASSOCIATION" of Philadelphia, which was founded in 1817 and later became Reliance Insurance Company. Reliance recently filed for backruptcy, ending a 180+ year history. Fire Mark advertising Reiance Insurance Company is mounted on a light bordered by dark wood plaque measuring 9.0"X 12.0".
