Fire Association of Philadelphia FIRE MARK Mug / Coffee Cup. American insurance company’s fire marks such as this were placed on the exterior of a house and were intended to discourage malicious arson by showing that the owner would not greatly suffer if the building were destroyed. Additionally, the mark stood as a guarantee to fire brigades that the insurance company which insured the house in question would reward handsomely the brigade extinguishing a blaze on the premises. This is a brand new (never used) mug in a cellaphane cover. Mug is clear acrylic and design includes an early hose and hydrant for The "FIRE ASSOCIATION" of Philadelphia, which was founded in 1817 and later became Reliance Insurance Company. Reliances name is also on the mug and they provided these to their agents and brokers. Reliance recently filed for backruptcy and these items are no longer available. Photo doesn’t do the design on the mug justice. This will make an excellent addition or gift for fire mark, fire fighting or insurance memorabilia collectors ---
